It’s Time to Get the Facts about Skin Cancer!
- Idaho has one of the highest Melanoma death rates in the nation- currently ranked 8th.
- Between 2001 & 2005 it was 26% higher than the national average.
- About 40 Idahoans die from Melanoma cancer every year.
- Melanoma is responsible for 75% of all deaths from skin cancer.
- Early detection is the key to survival…if it is detected & treated before it spreads, there is a 99% survival rate.
The facts and satistics don’t lie. Idahoans need to be more conscientious about protecting themselves against skin cancer. Harms Memorial with the help of grant money thru the Steele-Reese Foundation Special Project Fund of the Idaho Community Foundation, will be targeting our local events this summer to encourage and educate our community about the risks and ways to prevent skin cancer.
Harms Family Clinic will also be offering FREE skin cancer screenings each month this summer. Please look for date and time details on our Event posts webpage or in the local Power County Press. Please remember to protect yourself this summer and follow these easy options for sun protection:
- Use Sunscreen with and SPF of 30 or highter that has UVA & UVB protection.
- Wear clothing that protects exposed skin.
- Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade face, head, ears, and neck.
- Wear sunglasses that wrap to block UVA & UVB rays.
- Seek shade, especially during midday hours.
Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention: The Costs are Staggering…
- More than 1 in 3 U.S. adults currently live with one or more types of cardiovascular disease.
- An estimated 935,000 heart attacks & 795,000 strokes occur each year.
- Americans make more than 72 million doctor visits every year for treatment & management of cardiovascular diseases.
- Heart Disease & Stroke are the 1st and 4th leading causes of death for Idahoans.
Don’t become a part of these statistics! We encourage members of our community to learn more about their risk and take the necessary steps to avoid heart disease and stroke in the future by adopting a healthy lifestyle today- don’t smoke, get regular exercise, & eat healthy foods.
Harms Memorial is proud to work with the Idaho Heart Disease & Stroke Program to promote the importance of education in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
